The price we have paid for the progress that the world has made through development is the destruction of nature. The forests, rivers and the seas have been used for its natural wealth since the dawn of industrialization. The natural wealth has been indiscriminately exploited without concern for environment or the future. Within decades of industrialization, the negative impacts have been rapid that today this has become immediate global concern. Some of the issues that are debated and action taken are global warming, loss of biodiversity, the fresh water crisis, climate change, and pollution of water, air and land. Corresponding to the deteriorating environment, there has been an increasing awareness on the crisis as well as the environment. Government initiative, public support and private interest have taken environment to the centre stage. Protection of the remaining natural habitats has become the primary agenda now.

As a recreational activity, camping has a unique place. It is not just about taking pleasure from the activity during leisure periods. It is also much more than about physical and mental well-being. It is about connecting to the need of establishing a symbiotic relationship with nature. Human progress has taken a heavy toll of nature. The land, water and air have been subject to heavy pollution. The rivers, forests and valleys have been ravaged in the name of human progress. There is a growing consensus that an ecologically sustainable development alone will allow species survival, both human and non-human.

Just to try something new my husband and I decided to head off to the Osa Peninsula in Costa Rica. I had heard stories about how remote yet interesting this area was so to be honest we didn’t know what to expect. After thinking a lot about that comment we finally decided to fin out what the Osa Peninsula really was and off we went.

The species’ common name comes from a bony ridge between the eyes. It gives the appearance of a pair of spectacles. It is a crocodilian reptile. Al though they are one of the smallest crocodilian species these guys are fierce predators. It lives in a range of lowland wetland and riverside habitat and can tolerate salt water as well as fresh. In Guatemala it can be found in the northern department of Petn. It can be found in much of Central and South America.

White tailed deer are very popular in Central America. White-tailed deer can adapt to a wide variety of habitats. They also live in much of the Central American territory. In Costa Rica they are commonly seen in the rainforest of Guanacaste.
